The Story Behind the Name
Bear Cards was founded to celebrate the dedication, grit, and joy that young athletes bring to the pitch every single match.
The name carries a deeply personal meaning. It stands as a lasting tribute to Barney Brown—a beloved friend, Marine veteran, and devoted father whose loyalty, strength, and heart touched everyone around him. Most believe the name Barney came from the small town of Berney (pronounced "Barney," and usually spelled Barney today) in Norfolk Co., England. Some argue however the name is Norman, possibly derived from the Norse BJARNE, meaning "Bear." For me, Barney embodied this courageous animal. Once I discovered that connection, the name of this project was set in stone.
Above all, every custom card produced under this brand honors his legacy as a coach. I had the privilege of coaching a youth soccer team alongside Barney with both of our sons on the roster. Watching the patience, energy, and genuine care he brought to those boys left a permanent mark on me.
There are no words that can fully capture the impact he had on my life, nor is there enough I could ever do to match the man he was. But Bear Cards is my way of keeping that spirit alive: honoring teamwork, celebrating young athletes, and giving each player a tangible memory they can cherish for a lifetime.
